Meker podcast

Meker Podcast is a space where Ethiopian mental health therapists from around the world come together to share advice, insight, and experience—with heart, humor, and healing at the center.

Hosted by Bethelheim Haileyesus, Meker (መከር) in this context means to advise—a culturally rooted act of care, wisdom, and guidance. This podcast highlights the voices and stories of Ethiopian therapists in the diaspora and in Ethiopia, exploring their personal journeys, professional reflections, and views on mental health within a global and cultural context.

We talk about real challenges: working across cultures, navigating stigma, balancing personal healing with helping others, and envisioning more inclusive, grounded ways to support our communities.

Whether you are a therapist, a student, or someone simply curious about mental health and Ethiopian perspectives, Meker Podcast invites you to listen, reflect, and grow—together..

Here is our why

We created Meker Podcast to share the inner world of Ethiopian mental health therapists—the healing, the struggles, the wisdom, and the hope. This is a space to tell our stories: what it means to live and work abroad, to balance Western psychology with Ethiopian traditions, to sit with pain, and to believe in growth.

We also believe that mental health conversations should be accessible—especially in communities where there are few mental health professionals. By sharing openly, we hope to reduce stigma, offer guidance, and build a bridge between cultures, generations, and healing practices.

Meker is our way of saying: you’re not alone, your mind matters, and healing is possible.
